Getting a puppy is a big emotional and financial investment. You will want to buy from a responsible breeder, one who has put his/her knowledge and experience into producing a litter that will be a credit to the breed and a wonderful member of the family.

1. Before bringing a puppy home decide what the rules of conduct you will expect the puppy to live by. Will it be allowed on the sofa? Who is responsible for feeding and exercising? Etc.

2. Have the basic equipment - Food, bowls, buckle collar, leash, brush, comb, crate.

3. Puppies need lots of love and companionship, plan on bringing the puppy home when someone is going to be available. Puppies also need to sleep . A dog crate is one of the best investments. It becomes their own den and they feel very safe and secure in it when used properly.

4. Teach young children how to play and handle a puppy. They need lots of supervision so that a puppy is never teased or hurt by a young child.

5. A dog crate will help in housetraining also. It allows you to control your dog's environment when you can't watch him. Housetraining is setting a routine and sticking to it until the puppy understands it. Set feeding, walking, and sleeping times. Go out the same door to the same place at the same time and pretty soon he will catch on. Reward the good behavior and ignore the bad behavior. It takes time and effort for the puppy to understand what is expected of him.

6. Enjoy raising the puppy and have fun. This is by no means a complete "how to" on puppy raising. Buy some good books on the subject and read them. It makes the whole experience that much more fun.
